“How to get rid of clover and oxalis in lawns?” is a question often asked by lawn mowing contractors, gardeners and home owners.
White Clover (Trifolium repens) and creeping oxalis (Oxalis corniculata) are completely different weed (plant) species as you can tell by their different botanical names. These weeds when present in lawns and turfed areas can be come a real nuisance for the home or property owner.
These weeds, like most others, can be selectively removed with the appropriate selective herbicide.
Selective herbicides (for lawns) are those herbicides that target particular weeds in particular turf grass species.
The selective herbicides (available in the Australian retail market) for the eradication of clover and oxalis in lawns include 2 general herbicide products with the respective two (2) active constituents in each being: Bromoxynil and MCPA targeting broadleaf weeds in Buffalo lawns (or St Augustine grasses as they are referred to in North America) and Dicamba targeting broadleaf weeds in Kikuyu lawns and Couch lawns (or Bermuda grasses as they are referred to in North America).
In the retail market, home owners can apply a range of herbicides that are limited in their ability to control all weeds (in different turf situations) compared with what is available to professional Lawn Care operators.
With any lawn, care must be taken in applying the herbicides at the correct rate stated on the product label. The best advice for home owners is to initially apply these herbicides to a small section of lawn, wait 2 to 3 weeks to see that the weeds have been eradicated without any damage to the lawn.
The idea of testing the herbicide product on a small area of lawn should also be the norm when treating Buffalo lawns. The reason here (in Australia) is that there are around 10-15 Buffalo (St Augustine grass) varieties available to home owners and contractors and out of these 10 or so Buffalo varieties there are 3 that suffer badly when sprayed with Bromoxynil herbicide. These 3 Buffalo-s are the ST26, ST85 and ST91 Buffalo types. In my view, they should not be banned as they cannot be safely treated for weeds.
In the Australian climate, the clover and oxalis (being winter germinating weeds) tend to die out in the extreme heat in the later part of Summer. However, if they persist and the home owner does not have the good fortune of getting rid of these weeds then consult and employ a good Lawn Care operator.
