Wintergrass is a profuse seeder! Each wintergrass plant flowers to produce thousands of seeds. This opportunistic little weed thrives in all turf grass areas, and invades turfgrasses without too much effort.

Wintergrass germinates in early autumn, and remains a real problem "lawn weed" for winter, spring and for some of summer depending on how much moisture is about.

In spite of all the above, wintergrass can be controlled both with good horticultural practices and with the right lawn care applications.

A good lawn care contractor will be able to prevent the onslaught of wintergrass using pre-emergent control of winter grass seeds (that is, by preventing weed seeds from germinating), and also will be able to control any existing wintergrass with appropriate post emergent herbicides.

Pre emergent herbicides can be applied in granular form or in liquid herbicide spray treatments. The granular version is basically a granular fertilizer coated with the pre-emergent herbicide. In this form 2 things are performed simultaneously, that is, the turf is fed and the weed seeds are not allowed to germinate. The liquid version is a chemical diluted with water and applied to the turfed area. The herbicide covers the soil and does not allow weed seeds to germinate.

Post emergent herbicides are those that act after the weed germination has occurred. The herbicide makes contact with the plant and the poison is taken up by the plant thereby killing the winter grass.

Other horticultural practices include non-chemical means of weed control including correct watering, lawn mowing and other cultural practices.
