Can you hear the drum beats of the army worms?

Green Bites 1-For Greener, Weed Free Lawns-Forever!

Hi! How are you? This is Gerry Faehrmann, the lawn expert from Lawn Green. Each little while I will be sending out helpful tips for your lawns.

Can you hear the drum beats of the army worms? They are on their way to a lawn near you, or maybe even to your lawn. What do you do when they arrive?

The first sign of army worms is the apparent damage they do to your lawn. In effect they eat the leaf of your lawn to the stem. Overall, it would appear your lawn has been badly scalped.

The trick in reviving your lawn is to act quickly. Two (2) critical steps need to be implemented, that is, to arrest the offending army worms with a safe and effective control and then to fertilise the damaged areas. All the above needs to be done ASAP as the army worms wreak their havoc in the early Autumn period as the days become a little cooler. By acting quickly with the fertiliser, we hope to have some remaining warm weather to allow the turf to recover to its prior glory.

"Ouch!" Everyone I know dreads the cry of their little children after they walk through a patch of bindii.

Green Bites 2-For Greener, Weed Free Lawns- Forever!

Hi! How are you? This is Gerry Faehrmann, the lawn expert from Lawn Green.

Did you know that bindii seeds are already germinating in your lawn right now? Of course, you can take affirmative action now to see that you never have a problem with bindii, or for that matter any other winter or broadleaf weed.

By acting now you can take your lawn into Autumn and Winter looking greener, and most definitely weed free!

One thing for sure is to fertilise your lawn by Autumn. This way your lawn will be more dense and it will be harder for those weed seeds to germinate.

Green Bites 3-For Greener, Weed Free Lawns-Forever!

Hi! This is Gerry Faehrmann, the lawn expert from Lawn Green.

Lawn Green has developed the DRY Lawn Care method using totally DRY (and solid) products from fertilisers, insect control agents and to including herbicides. This is really innovative as we have just about eliminated any need for spraying applications.

The success of Lawn Green's DRY Lawn Care method is achieved by using a granular fertiliser product that is coated with herbicide. The fertiliser naturally greens the lawn and the herbicide stops weed seeds from germinating. It's that good we tell our new clients and other interested people to have a look at the front lawns of houses that we already look after.

And, of course, our Dry Lawn Care system is 100% safer for pets, children and plants.

. . . kill wintergrass: the public enemy Number 1 of lawn lovers!

Green Bites 4-For Greener, Weed Free Lawns-Forever!

Hi! This is Gerry Faehrmann, the lawn expert from Lawn Green.

A profuse seeder, this opportunistic little weed thrives in all turf areas, invading turfgrasses when competition from other grasses is at it's lowest. Wintergrass germinates in autumn, and remains a real problem lawn weed for winter and spring.

In spite of all the above, wintergrass can be controlled both with good horticultural practices and with the right lawn care applications. A good lawn care contractor will be able to prevent the onslaught of wintergrass using pre-emergent control (that is, by preventing weed seeds from germinating), and also will be able to control any existing wintergrass with the appropriate herbicide.

Why does grass lose its colour in winter?

Green Bites 5-For Greener, Weed Free Lawns-Forever!

Hi! This is Gerry Faehrmann, the lawn expert from Lawn Green.

So why does grass lose its colour in winter?

Sydney lawns lose their colour when the winter sun drops lower in the sky. With less sunlight energy your grass produces less chlorophyl, hence there is less photosynthesising going on, and so your lawn stops growing (as much as in summer) and loses its colour. A good tip is to mow your lawn higher over winter: the greater surface area of lawn leaves allows for more photosynthesis (and therefore the lawn turf retains more green colour than usual) in spite of less sunlight hours.

Understanding this process helps to time feeding in anticipation of Winter dormancy and also indicates when Spring feeding can be best timed to help the grass bounce into another growing season. All in all it means more a durable and better looking turf.

Hi! This is Gerry Faehrmann, the lawn expert from Lawn Green.

If I "got a dollar" for every time somebody said they could not control weeds in their buffalo lawn, I'd be a rich man! Yes Don, you can control weeds in buffalo lawns! We can eliminate broadleaf weeds using safe and effective weed control agents. Other weeds may require a different approach but nothing is impossible.

Buffalo lawn (including Sir Walter buffalo turf) is a great turf grass for shady areas. These days we have solutions for the control of weeds in buffalo turf. Did you know we can even control kikuyu in a buffalo lawn?

Want to save money on your water bill?

Green Bites 7-For Greener, Weed Free Lawns-Forever!

Hi! This is Gerry Faehrmann, the lawn expert from Lawn Green.

I bet you are paying too much for your water! You are if you are not using it properly! Some people make the mistake of watering their lawns every day for 5 to 10 minutes. This is the worst thing for their lawns.

A healthy turf grass will have a root system penetrating the soil profile to 200mm depth. As good gardeners, we need to water heavily but infrequently. What happens then is the water penetrates deep into the soil, then between "drinks" the top layer (of say 30mm or 1 inch) of soil dries out, hence making it harder for weed seeds to germinate.

Remember "Treat it mean to keep it green!" By following this simple rule (deep but infrequent watering), we conserve water and also train our turf grass and turf grass root system to search deeper for moisture, resulting in a healthier, greener lawn.

"Can you save my lawn?"

Green Bites 8-For Greener, Weed Free Lawns-Forever!

Hi! This is Gerry Faehrmann, the lawn expert from Lawn Green.

We have had people asking us (in desperate tones), "Can you save my lawn?".

Did you know that for a fraction of the cost of replacing turf, you can nurture your old lawn back to SCG standards? That's right, and it can be achieved in the matter of weeks depending on the time of year.

Good lawn care contractors will be able to eliminate the weeds from the following turf situations:

  1. All broadleaf weeds from couch, kikuyu, durban and buffalo (including Sir Walter buffalo and Palmetto buffalo)
  2. All annual grassy weeds including wintergrass, summergrass, crowsfoot, nutgrass and so on from all turf areas
  3. Undesirable turf grasses in your turf such as kikuyu (being the weed) in couch turf or buffalo turf
  4. Paspalum from couch, and other turf situations.
  5. Rye grass from couch, and other lawns
  6. All weeds (if the contractor knows what he is doing!).

5 great tips for Lawn Lovers!

Green Bites 9-For Greener, Weed Free Lawns-Forever!

Hi! This is Gerry Faehrmann, the lawn expert from Lawn Green.

You can have greener, weed free lawns if you follow 5 important tips!!

  1. Regular fertilising and weed control of lawn areas.
  2. To make it harder for lawn weeds to spread and proliferate, it is desirable to mow the lawn at a height of around 30mm (generally for most turf grasses including kikuyu, couch and buffalo – and for durban at a height of around 50mm). The turf grass will grow dense and thick, making it harder for weed seeds to germinate. Best results will occur with frequent mowing, thus encouraging good lateral growth.
  3. Correct watering habits! Deep and infrequent watering of your lawn will give best results. People make the mistake of watering their lawn every day for short periods of 5 minutes.
  4. Water your lawns (and plants for that matter) in the morning time to reduce chances of fungal attacks.
  5. Remind your lawnmower man to only ever remove one-third of the turf grass's leaf (at each mowing session), and to also to raise the mower's cutting height to avoid lawn scalping. In the event of lawn scalping, use river sand to remove any lumps and bumps in the lawn. River sand does not go hard and crusty in the summer heat like ordinary top-soil does, and can be purchased in bagged quantities from local suppliers.

More tips for Lawn Lovers

(as heard on the 2UE Gardening Show on the 8th January, 2005)

Green Bites 10-For Greener Weed Free Lawns-Forever!

Hi! This is Gerry Faehrmann, the lawn expert from Lawn Green.

With good lawnmowing technique you prevent and minimise lawn thatch buildup.

Lawn thatch is dead plant material buildup, which is a breeding ground for disease, fungus and pest insects.

  1. By using a cylinder mower you automatically prevent thatch buildup.
  2. With a rotary mower it is important to mow the lawn in one direction one week, then in the opposite direction the next week, then we mow 90 degrees the next week, and so on. If you have a lawnmowing contractor mowing your lawn pass this handy tip on.

Fertilising tips for your lawn:

  1. Resist the temptation to over feed the lawn as this can promote lawn thatch buildup. As always follow the product label's instructions.
  2. Your lawn will respond beautifully to a "feed" followed by some nice rain. After a drop of rain, (on the allowed watering days) give your lawn a heavy soak to compound the effect of the rain in the previous days. That is, to help the water to soak deeply to the turf grass roots.
  3. Use granular slow release fertilisers. These are best for a consistent green appearance for three months to the next treatment. The drawback with "spray on fertilisers" is they tend to give a sudden burst of colour that is only short lived.
  4. Leave the sulphate of ammonia in the shed. Sure this greens up the lawn but only encourages poor root development and growth.

How do I stop my pet from burning my lawn?

Green Bites 11-For Greener, Weed Free Lawns-Forever!

Hi! This is Gerry Faehrmann, the lawn expert from Lawn Green.

Is your lawn dotted with burnt grass where the dog or cat has urinated?

When pets (mainly dogs) urinate on your lawn, the after effect can be patches of burnt lawn. This, however, depends if the urine is heavily acidic or heavily alkaline.

What you do then is go to the chemist, buy some litmus paper and check the acidity or alkalinity of the urine. If the litmus paper turns pink, the urine is acidic. However, if the litmus paper turns blue, the urine is alkaline.

The solution (if urine is acidic) is to increase the amount of green (inc broccoli) and orange (inc carrots) vegetables in the pet's diet.

The solution (if urine is alkaline) is to increase meat protein (inc red meat or red meat based foods) in the pet's diet.

"Should I topdress my lawn?"

Green Bites 13-For Greener, Weed Free Lawns-Forever!

Hi! This is Gerry Faehrmann, the lawn expert from Lawn Green.

A common question asked by friends and clients is, "Should I aerate, scarify and topdress my lawn?"

  1. Only topdress your lawn to remove the lumps and bumps in the lawn. The best for this is river sand, which can be purchased in bagged quantities from your local nursery. River sand remains soft (unlike regular topsoil) throughout the hot summer months allowing the turf to easily take hold. Also bear in mind to topdress with river sand lightly so as not to totally cover your lawn turf. Another tip: only topdress in spring or summer, not in winter.
  2. Your lawn will benefit from lawn aeration or lawn coring if the soil profile has become compacted and hard. Make sure you water the lawn areas heavily the couple of days prior to carrying out the aerating or coring. Remember, after aerating you need to follow up with good watering so as to maintain a wet soil profile until the lawn turf grows vigorously. Lawn aeration is best carried out in the warmer seasons.
  3. Scarifying your lawn removes thatch (or dead grass material) beneath the healthy turf growth. Thatch is unhealthy for one's lawn as it is the breeding ground for fungus, disease and pest insects. Regular mowing at a reasonably short height (say 25-30mm depending on the turf species) will help prevent thatch build-up. Every few years it may be necessary to de-thatch your lawn with a lawn scarifier (comber).

Why does grass lose its colour in winter?

Green Bites 14-For Greener, Weed Free Lawns-Forever!

Hi! This is Gerry Faehrmann, the lawn expert from Lawn Green.

So why does grass lose its colour in winter? Sydney lawns lose their colour when the winter sun drops lower in the sky. With less sunlight energy your grass produces less chlorophyll, hence there is less photosynthesising going on, and your lawn grows less vigorously (than in summer) and so loses its colour.

A good tip is to mow your lawn a notch higher over winter: the greater surface area of lawn leaf allows for more photosynthesis (and therefore the lawn turf retains more green colour than usual) in spite of less sunlight hours.

What is the best turf grass for me?

Green Bites 15-For Greener, Weed Free Lawns-Forever!

Hi! This is Gerry Faehrmann, the lawn expert from Lawn Green.

So what turf grass should I have for my own lawn: kikuyu, couch or buffalo?

Quite often people ask me what really is the best turf for their yard. Invariably, the type of turf grass present in someone's yard may have been the appropriate turf grass when the property was initially landscaped. However, with the passage of time all garden plants and trees grow to quite large plants and trees. Also over the years turf grasses have been bred to perform better in shadier areas.

Kikuyu and couch turf grasses are characterised by poor growth in shaded areas. Generally these turf grasses require six hours of sunlight to full sun to perform at peak. A good tip for lawn lovers is to trim over hanging plants from garden edges and to under-prune low branches from tree canopies to allow more direct sunlight to lawn areas.

In recent years, buffalo turf varieties have been bred to perform well in full sun and also exhibit good shade tolerance. Those which require minimal direct sunlight (of say 3 to 4 hours per day) include the Palmetto Buffalo (aka Palmetto St Augustine) and Sir Walter Buffalo. Sir Walter being an Austalian Turf, is well suited to the Australian environment and therefore an excellent choice for a family lawn.

Lawn Green's preferred supplier is Greenline Turf who are licensed suppliers of Sir Walter and Palmetto buffalos. For more information on these turf grasses visit http://www.greenlineturf.com.au/

5 Benefits of Lawn Green's weed and feed Lawn Care service!

Green Bites 16-For Greener, Weed Free Lawns-Forever!

Hi! This is Gerry Faehrmann, the lawn expert from Lawn Green.

The 5 benefits enjoyed by Lawn Green clients and friends!

  1. Greener, weed free lawns-forever! Guaranteed-No More Weeds! Our weed-free success is achieved by using a granular fertilizer product that is coated with pre-emergent herbicide. The fertiliser naturally greens the lawn and the herbicide stops weed seeds from germinating.
  2. It's totally dry! Our approach to Lawn Care is designed to eliminate (as much as possible) the need for ongoing spray or liquid herbicide applications. It's hard for Trade Secrets to look at a perfectly manicured front lawn without thinking of the dark underbelly of suburbia, as in the David Lynch movie Blue Velvet or on television in Desperate Housewives. White picket fences and picture-perfect carpets of green have come to represent something altogether more sinister than home sweet home.

Despite such cultural stereotyping, and the fact that lawns have long been denounced as water- and time-wasters for the obsessive-compulsive, the smell of freshly cut grass cannot be replaced, and the quest for the flawless lawn continues.

Gerry Faehrmann says good maintenance can take the place of needless watering. He hasn't watered his lawn for a year, but it's the crowning glory of his neighbourhood. It's lush and green with no weeds. No brown patches. No bindi-eyes. But you would expect that from a lawn specialist. "I've got the healthiest lawn in the street," he says. "The guy across the road goes out and waters his lawn in the period he's allowed to - and all he's doing is keeping the top layer of soil wet for weed seeds to have fun."

Faehrmann says Sydney's rainfall over the past year has been enough to maintain a healthy lawn. He says grass benefits from the kind of rain that is Sydney's specialty - heavy but infrequent - so the water can seep into the roots, which are 15 to 20 centimetres deep. And as the top layer dries out, it becomes difficult for weed seeds to germinate. "It's really critical that you do heavy watering, but infrequently," Faehrmann says.

Maintaining a lawn, however, is not done by pragmatism alone. Faehrmann, who operates his lawn-care business from Cherrybrook, offers "greener weed-free" lawns through a regulated three-monthly chemical cocktail of fertilising and insect and weed control. He also provides a system of "drought-proofing" whereby a granular product is applied to the lawn to boost the water-carrying capacity of the soil.

"Everything we do is geared at minimising the amount of spray," Faehrmann says. "We use a granular fertiliser that's coated with a pre-emergent herbicide. The fertiliser greens up the lawn and the herbicide sits in the soil and stops weed seeds from germinating."

Faehrmann says pests such as sod worm, bill bug, caterpillars and army worm can cause devastation so his lawn-care treatment also uses an insecticide based on the organic material pyrethrum.

When mowing, many people are prone to "scalp" their lawns, which is as painful a process as it sounds. Faehrmann says that when cut too short, soil is exposed, making the lawn brown and patchy and giving weeds and insects a greater chance to proliferate. He has seen some patchy lawns in his time but none that are beyond redemption.

"In the spring and summertime we can get results within four weeks. In winter, we eliminate the weeds and get the lawn ready for springtime activity when it starts to regenerate itself in a pretty powerful way."

Trader's tip
When you cut the lawn too short, or "scalp" it, you are making it more
susceptible to pests and weed invasion.

You can have a great looking lawn, even without watering it!

Green Bites 18-For Greener, Weed Free Lawns-Forever!

Hi! This is Gerry Faehrmann, the lawn expert from Lawn Green.

Conserve water and still have a lush green lawn this summer! How? Just follow the golden rule of watering, that is, heavy but infrequent watering.

A healthy turf grass will have a root system penetrating the soil profile to 200mm depth. By watering heavily but infrequently, the water penetrates deep into the soil allowing the turf grass roots to absorb moisture and between "drinks" the top layer of soil (of say 30mm or 1 inch) dries out, hence making it harder for weeds and weed seeds to survive.

This heavy but infrequent watering is already mimicked by our natural rainfall. So really we need not worry too much about hand watering. That's right, you can have a great lawn with No Watering Required. All the above assumes you already have implemented some sort of weed & feed Lawn Care program.

Additionally, you can also conserve water with Lawn Green's Drought Proofing Service (using granular wetting agents). When applied to a lawn, the wetting agent increases the ability of applied water or natural rainfall to penetrate into, and then percolate through the soil profile. Naturally, the main benefit here is improving the efficiency of irrigation.

Lawn Green's drought proofing service improves the coverage of water around individual soil particles, and holds it longer for use by plant roots. At the same time it promotes the drainage of soil water to allow the return of air to soil pore spaces. The lawn wetting agent is applied every 2 months during the warm season, and it is an excellent defence mechanism against drought induced lawn stress.

More tips for a greener, weed free lawn!

Green Bites 19-For Greener, Weed Free Lawns-Forever!

Hi! This is Gerry Faehrmann, the lawn expert from Lawn Green.

Following up from last month where we talked about our lawns needing heavy but infrequent watering (generally achieved by our rainfall), we have some more handy tips for greener, weed free lawns.

As all our clients know, regular or frequent lawn mowing encourages nice lateral turf growth. With a thicker, greener lawn you can expect less weeds. Also a healthy lawn tends to out-compete and out-perform weeds and weed seeds.

You can breathe life into your lawn this Spring & Summer by aerating or coring your lawn. Lawn aeration is really only needed if the soil is hard and compacted. By allowing the soil to breathe easily the turf grass roots are more able to receive all essential nutrients from lawn fertilisation. Also, the turf grass roots and runners are able to grow more freely in a more porous soil. Another way to increase the soil porosity (after aeration) is to introduce river sand to the aerated lawn areas.

Enemies of the Lawn – lawn insect pests!

Green Bites 20-For Greener, Weed Free Lawns-Forever!

Hi! This is Gerry Faehrmann, the lawn expert from Lawn Green.

Spring has well and truly sprung.

The warm Spring weather coupled with moist and humid conditions give us good conditions for the onset of lawn insect pests. Did you know that besides armyworm (a caterpillar) there are 2 other types of lawn pest insects? -that is, scarabs and weevils.

As discussed in other news letters we control all the Enemies of the Lawn with granular insectides. We avoid the use of spray on insecticides of days gone by for obvious reasons. As we always say, less spraying is better.

More Enemies of the Lawn – fungal diseases and brown spots!

Green Bites 21-For Greener, Weed Free Lawns-Forever!

Hi! This is Gerry Faehrmann, the lawn expert from Lawn Green.

Summer is now well on the way.

And with a return  to more normal rainfall and humidity, our lawns are susceptible to fungal diseases.

Lawn damage as a result of disease is manifested by brown spots in the lawn. These can generally be small rings (50mm wide) to larger circular patterns of around 200mm wide. If left unattended a lawn can suffer extensive damage. Your lawn investment is best protected with quick curative action.

Soil testing for a better lawn!

Green Bites 22-For Greener, Weed Free Lawns-Forever!

Hi! This is Gerry Faehrmann, the lawn expert from Lawn Green.

Some people ask us if they should test their soil's pH (in lawn areas). Generally speaking, we recommend good turf management practices such as regular lawn fertilization, heavy but infrequent watering, lawn aeration and frequent lawn mowing. If your lawn is struggling in spite of all the above then "yes" it is a good thing to test your soil's pH levels.

pH is the measure of acidity and alkalinity in the soil, and is measured from 1.0 to 14 where below 7 is acid and above 7 is alkaline. Where the lawn's soil is acidic, occasional lime applications help reduce soil acidity. If the soil is too alkaline, then you can correct the imbalance by adding sulphur.

High alkalinity increases clover development and earthworm activity. So a good tip for lawn lovers with a serious earthworm problem in their lawn is to increase acidity slightly (by adding sulphur).

Don't you hate seeing shoe-shaped dead patches in the lawn!

Green Bites 23-For Greener, Weed Free Lawns-Forever!

Hi! This is Gerry Faehrmann, the lawn expert from Lawn Green.

Dead patches in the lawn the same shape as your shoes!

Be very careful when you are spraying Roundup on the weeds in your paved areas. By walking over the sprayed areas then walking over the lawn areas you will find dead patches appearing on your lawn 2-3 weeks later. It's not a good look!

Another trick for those that want to minimise spraying with Roundup is to pour boiling water over weeds in the concrete cracks or paving bricks.

Water Restrictions! Where to from here?

Green Bites 24-For Greener, Weed Free Lawns-Forever!

Hi! This is Gerry Faehrmann, the lawn expert from Lawn Green.

Feeling nervous about further water restrictions? Worry no more!

When your lawn is fed with a controlled release granular fertilizer, then all you need for your lawn is heavy but infrequent watering. This heavy but infrequent watering is already mimicked by our rainfall. Most turf grasses have root systems that grow to 200mm deep, hence, the need for heavy and infrequent watering.

Therefore, it is recommended all lawn lovers leave the watering for the garden plants. As far as the lawn areas go, I always say, "Treat it mean to keep it green!"

If only I could get rid of Onion Weed in my lawn!

Green Bites 25-For Greener, Weed Free Lawns-Forever!

Hi! This is Gerry Faehrmann, the lawn expert from Lawn Green.

The good news is we can get rid of Onion Weed in your lawn!

Most lawns infested with onion weed can be saved. In kikuyu and couch lawn situations onion weed can be removed selectively. However, the same professional herbicide cannot be used on all buffalo lawns.

Where the onion weed infestation in the buffalo lawn is mild, then we can poison the individual onion weed plants with glyphosate (aka Roundup). Care needs to be taken (when applying the glyphosate) so as not to make any contact with the buffalo turf.

Where onion weed infestation in a buffalo lawn is beyond the control suggested above, then you need to contact Greenline Turf (visit them at http://www.greenlineturf.com.au/ ) for turf replacement.

Ouch! Everyone dreads the cry of little children walking through a patch of bindii.

Green Bites 26-For Greener, Weed Free Lawns-Forever!

Hi! This is Gerry Faehrmann, the lawn expert from Lawn Green.

Did you know that bindii seeds are already germinating in your lawn right now? Of course, you can take positive action now to see that you never have a problem with bindii, or for that matter any other winter or broadleaf weed.

By acting now you can take your lawn into Autumn and Winter looking greener, and most definitely weed free!

One thing for sure is to fertilise your lawn by Autumn. This way your lawn will be more dense and it will be harder for those weed seeds to germinate.

. . . don't you hate spray-drifting lawn chemicals . . .

Green Bites 27-For Greener, Weed Free Lawns-Forever!

Hi! This is Gerry Faehrmann, the lawn expert from Lawn Green.

There is nothing worse than spraying your lawn for broadleaf weeds, and 2 weeks later finding your lawn weeds are dead along with a whole lot of your cherished garden plants.

Lawn Green's approach to Lawn Care is to minimize herbicide spraying where possible. This approach has been achieved by using the DRY Lawn Care method.

The success of Lawn Green's DRY Lawn Care method is achieved by using a granular fertiliser product that is coated with a pre-emergent herbicide. The fertiliser naturally greens the lawn and the herbicide stops weed seeds from germinating.

This is really innovative as we have greatly reduced the need for spraying applications, thus making our Lawn Care system safer for pets, children and plants.

"Can you save my lawn?"

Green Bites 28-For Greener, Weed Free Lawns-Forever!

Hi! This is Gerry Faehrmann, the lawn expert from Lawn Green.

We have had people asking us (in desperate tones), "Can you save my lawn?".

Did you know that for a fraction of the cost of replacing turf, you can nurture your old grass back to lush green lawn? That's right, and it can be achieved in the matter of weeks depending on the time of year.

Good lawn care contractors will be able to selectively remove weeds from the following turf situations:

  4. Paspalum from couch, and other turf situations
  5. Rye grass from couch, kikuyu and other lawns
  6. Onion weed from all lawns
  7. Kurnell curse from couch, queensland blue couch and kikuyu lawns
  8. All weeds (if the contractor knows what he is doing!)

For more information on our innovative approach to lawn care using the DRY Lawn Care method go to our web site.

"Should I topdress my lawn?"

Green Bites 29-For Greener, Weed Free Lawns-Forever!

Hi! This is Gerry Faehrmann, the lawn expert from Lawn Green.

A common question asked by friends and clients is, "Should I aerate, scarify and topdress my lawn?"

  1. Only topdress your lawn (in spring or summer) to remove the lumps and bumps in the lawn.
  2. Your lawn will benefit from lawn aeration or lawn coring if the soil profile has become compacted and hard. Make sure you water the lawn areas heavily the couple of days prior to carrying out the aerating or coring (to maximize coring depth).

Beat the Water Restrictions this summer!

Green Bites 30-For Greener, Weed Free Lawns-Forever!

Hi! This is Gerry Faehrmann, the lawn expert from Lawn Green.

Conserve water and still have a lush green lawn this summer! How? Just follow the golden rule of watering, that is, heavy but infrequent watering.

Healthy turf grasses have root systems penetrating the soil profile to 200-300mm depth.

Additionally, you can also conserve & better utilise water with Lawn Green's Drought Proofing Service (using granular wetting agents).

If you know someone who enjoys their lawn with no time to care for it, please ask them to call us on 1300.55.74.72 or visit us at http://www.lawngreen.com.au/ for our weed & feed Lawn Care program where we turn tired old grass into lush green lawns!

Army Worm alert to all Lawn Green clients!

Hi! This is a quick note to let you know that many lawns over Sydney are being eaten and damaged by Cut Worm and Army Worm (lawn feeding caterpillars) and Bill Bug (a weevil).

The damage is quite obvious. Areas, both small and large, are off-colour or quite dead looking. The general appearance is a blotchy one.

Please call me if you want us to carry out the insect control treatment.

In most cases the lawn areas are repairable. However, it is important to revive the damaged lawn areas immediately with extra doses of balanced granular fertiliser. Be sure to follow our tips for regular mowing and heavy (and infrequent) watering.

Note: These areas should also be treated with safe and effective insect control. Lawn Green only uses granular insecticide.

Please call us on 1300 55 74 72 if you need help.
